Parts of this road are currently under construction and roadworks may be found between Tatlisu and Buyukkonuk. It can take 90 minutes to 2 hours. You will enter the village of Buyukkonuk from the north, coming down from the hills.Go to the "T" junction where the mosque is and turn left. The island, birthplace of Aphrodite, has succeeded in preserving an unpolluted coastline and landscape in the heart of the Mediterranean region. Nobody can be indifferent towards the beauty of Northern Cyprus. The landscape changes enchantingly within short distances from pinnacled mountains to fertile plains. In Northern Cyprus three main types of landscape follow one another in long horizontal bands.The Mesaoria is the central plain which lies between Famagusta and Nicosia. Fields of cereal spread out interminably in this fertile region, shades of green transforming into gold as seasons go by. It disappears in the west of Nicosia, between the foothills of Trodos (South Cyprus) and those of the Finger Mountains, reappearing around Güzelyurt (Morphou) the kingdom of citrus fruits in the west of the island.The Five Finger Mountains, with scattered vegetation on the northern side, stretch out from the cape Korucam to the cape Zafer (Andreas), the very end of the Karpas peninsula. HERBARIUM IN NORTH CYPRUS:Northern Cyprus luckily has more to offer than its sun and sea, natural beauties and historic sites. One surprising attraction is the Northern Cyprus herbarium, which charms lovers of our wild flowers as well as providing a research centre for botanists. Most people can confidently name the more showy blooms in the countryside; shepherds and foresters know dozens more. But how many of those seventeen North Cyprus "endemics", found nowhere else in the world, would you recognise? It was to fill this need that the collection of pressed and labelled plants originally made by the resident English botanist Deryck Viney in the course of writing his illustrated Flora of the country was adopted by The Forestry Department and formally opened to the public, on 9.11.1989. Since then it has expanded to include examples of nearly all the 1,250 native plants species. And for the guidance of visitors it has special displays of flower photographs, specimens of all those seventeen "endemics", photographs of the oldest and biggest trees, and a separate collections of bulky fruits. The herbarium is housed in the ALEVKAYA Forest Station on the mountain ridge between Esentepe and Degirmenlik. It can be approached either by mountain road or by a lower tarmac road or by coastal road through Karaagaç or Esentepe. Via the mountain road coming from Girne, drive past the Besparmak mountain and on top of the hill make a left turn to ALEVKAYA past the quarry. This is a roughly 9 km. drive along a narrow road but the views make this route well worthwhile. The other route takes the road, further down the hill, signposted to ALEVKAYA. You can also reach the Herbarium via the northern coastal road by turning south either at Karaagaç or Esentepe. NORTH CYPRUS CULTURE:Cypriot culture is also reflected in the rich folk art of the island. Age-old crafts, handed down from one generation to another, are faithfully carried on to this day by skilful hands and nimble fingers, fashioning handicrafts, both decorative and useful, that would grace any home.Carnival is one of the best known Cypriot and throughout the year there are also exhibitions, concerts, drama and folk festivals.Whatever the present-day situation may be, Cyprus is littered with reminders of the island's history. Many villages specialize in a particular art form, and as you travel around Cyprus you'll see pottery, silver and copperware, basket weaving, tapestry and Lefkara's famous lacework. Hamams:Ottoman Turks built many public baths in major towns on the island.There are separate baths for men and women. After entering the hamam wrapped in a towel you go to a large heated headstone in the middle where one perspires and is rubbed down by a bath attendant.This method of bathing is supposed to be refreshing and many of the old marble baths are architecturally interesting. Folk Dancing:Folk is an old tradition in North Cyprus. The Turkish Cypriot people do their folk-dances at the ceremonious occassions such as marriages, kina nights, harvest days, etc. These dances are generally performed in the following sequence : meeting dances, henkerchief dances, “zeybek” dance, women dances, dramatic dances, and butcher dances. Meeting dances consist of men and women gathering. The women’s dances are generally slower in tempo. Traditional Hand Crafts:The lace industry of Cyprus should need no further advertisement than a simple statement of the fact that Leonardo Da Vinci visited the island to purchase lace for the Milan Cathedral.However, lace is only one aspect of the many-faceted tradition in local craftsmanship which includes colourful homespun linen, thatched chairs, painted gourds, worked silverware, pottery and intricate crochet.A centre has now been established in Nicosia to act as a showpiece for the Handicrafts Authority and provide training. At the same time, incentives have been provided to village communities to build up cottage industries. Especially successful has been the revival of lace in Athienou, Kornos and Kilani, and pottery in Kornos, Phini and Ayios Dimitrios.The Authority has also trained refugee craftswomen to ensure that their inherited skills - such as the weaving of Lefkoniko linens - do not become extinct. Art:Throughout the centuries both the history and culture of Cyprus have been formed by its location at the crossroads of cultural exchange between Europe, Asia and Africa . Antiquities excavated on Cyprus bear witness to a culture influenced from abroad, due to its geographic location between the great cultures of the ancient world, but which developed from these influences its own unique tradition. Though less well known than the art of Ancient Greece and Rome , it has a charm all its own. The Kyrenia Museum of Folk Art situated on the Kyrenia Harbour road was opened in 1974. It is a fine example of pre XVII Century buildings which have traditionally housed Cypriots. These buildings consisting of a ground floor and an upper floor have their main entrances opening to the harbour. These typical Cypriot houses contain many traditional Cypriot items. On the ground floor, there are items such as oil-mill, plough, agricultural instruments, large earthenware fan, and workbenches which were used until recently, but are not known by the younger generation. There is a room for a watchman on the stairway leading to the upper floor. In the first room of the upper floor there are examples of especially chosen works and handy works (crochet work, materials embroidered with colorful threads or silver threads, bedspreads, tables covers, head scarves, pillow cases, woolen socks and bowls etc...) from various areas of Cyprus,displayed in glass cabinets.The second room used as a kitchen contains water jugs, wooden mortars, wine bowls, and ceramic bowls.
NORTH CYPRUS FESTIVALS AND EVENTS:North Cyprus is becoming a generous host to many cultural events.The island has started to host many cultural events over the past few years.They are generally held at historical sites such as Bellapais abbey,Kyrenia castle, Salamis Ampitheatre and Othello's Tower, such events have always attracted wide interest and you can come across cultural activities almost every weekend making it possible for visitors to experience such culture.During the spring months of April and May Bellapais Abbey plays host to an array of celebrated musicians all over the world.Another city beginning to make a name for hosting music activities in Famagusta.It is possible to listen to many mucisians courtesy of Famagusta municipality's annual music festival.Apart from the packed festival programme there are individual events to entertain music lovers. Kyrenia International Olive Festival: One of the most precious products of the Mediterranean is the olive.The benefits of olive and olive oil to our health have been emphasized in the recent years.In order to encourage olive production and to promote its side products worldwide, various countries in the Mediterranean region such as Portugal, Spain, Turkey, Italy, Greece and France undertake various activities.Since 2001, the Municipality of Kyrenia have been organizing the Olive Festival in the village of Zeytinlik, in order to promote and encourage olive production and also increase tourism potential of Girne.The 6th Olive Fest will take place between 5th and 10th of October, 2007.Many local and international artists and dance groups are invited to the fest. This year’s participants are as follows;The Municipality of Bursa,Municipality of Izmir-Karsiyaka, Italy, Slovakia, Russia, Romania, Russia,Romania, Germany, members from the Turkish Cypriot Folklor Dance Federation. In addition to the traditional folklore dance teams, the local music bands will also take place at the festival. The main theme of the festival is the promotion of olive and protection of olive trees.For the last 4 years, we have been trying to increase the artistic dimension of the festival.In addition to the music, folklore dance shows, painting-sculpture exhibitions, we also incorporated a puppet-making workshop, Puppet Shows from Turkey & Russia.The City Theatre of the Municipality of Bursa will perform two different plays.http://www.zeytinfest.com Bellapais International Music Festival: http://www.bellapaisfestival.com North Cyprus Rally Organisations:http://www.kktok.com South Cyprus Rally: Limassol This is a popular annual event which takes place on the last weekend in September as part of the European Championship. The cars race along winding mountain roads and dirt tracks across the entire island, but the rally is based in Limassol itself. Here, the old town seafront is transformed into a 'Rally Village' for the competitors.World-famous teams like Ford, Hyundai,Subaru,Seat,Mitsubishi and Peugeot all set up caravans and mobile homes, filling the town with a great buzz and excitement. Zoo In the Municipal Gardens,(South Cyprus): 28 Aktouvriou Street you can find a wonderful zoo (albeit small) with the following species - lions, tigers, leopards, bears, moufflons, langur, different kinds of birds, donkeys, baboons, porcupines and tortoises, turtles, monkeys, ponies, zebras, ostriches etc. This is a great excursion for the kids and there is even a children's playground in the gardens. Open daily: 9-1, 2.30-6.30. Limassol Luna Parks (South Cyprus) Bring the kids here to enjoy the funfair rides. Due to their long opening hours you can easily fit in a few tumbles after a day at the beach. The times are approximately 9.30am-8pm, but do check as hours vary from day to day. Find them adjacent to the Roussos Beach Hotel and Christaki Kranou Street, Potamos Germasogeia area. Waterworld (South Cyprus) The top choice has got to be Waterworld Waterpark, Agia Napa. Tel: 23 724 444, Located 5km outside town, on Agia Thekla Road, Waterworld is an excellent waterpark fully equipped with water chutes, twisting slides, log rolling, lazy river tips, spouting geysers and spray columns. It is quite pricey, but you can spend a whole day here and children do seem to love it. There are good changing facilities and an ice cream parlour for extra treats! Tel: 25 714 235 Fax: 25 714 237. Both kids and adults will have a fantastic trip here in the leafy area of Fasouri about 10 kilometres west of Limassol. Enjoy the 3000m2 wave pool, the body slides and Lazy River. Take the young ones to splash about in the Children's Pool and, for the most daring amongst you, brace yourselves for the Free Fall Kamikaze which will get the adrenalin pumping and leave you wanting to do it again and again! The 42acre complex also has gift shops, the Canal Restaurant and Burger Mania to top up those energy levels. Open from May to October from 10-18.00h daily. Working hours in Northern Cyprus: Shops are open with some variations but generallySummer: 8:00-13:00 and 16:00-19:00 Winter: 9:00-13:00 and 14:00-18:00 Banks (Mon-Fri) Public Services Winter : CAR DRIVING IN NORTH CYPRUS:Driving in Northern Cyprus is the most advisable form of transport as there are infrequent bus services to many of the more remote areas of the country; and bus services cease to operate after 5:00 p.m.Road surfaces between major towns and villages are reasonably good, but some mountain and village roads are still unsurfaced, so care should be taken especially in wet weather. Visitors wishing to bring their own car to Northern Cyprus from abroad may do so for a period of up to 3 months provided the vehicle has a valid registration license from its country of origin.Visitors in Cyprus can drive using a valid international driving license or a valid driving license from their country of origin. Visitors bringing their own cars from abroad will need to purchase insurance upon entry to Northern Cyprus. Most petrol stations are open from 7:00 a.m. and close around 8:00 a.m. Some however, stay open later and there is an increasing number of stations which operate 24 hours a day. Free municipal parking is available in all major towns.In Northern Cyprus, drive on the left.Traffic and road signs are International. Maximum speed is 100km./hr. Drivers are prohibited to drive under the influence of alcohol. The limit is 50 mgr (As in Europe). BORDER CROSSING FROM SOUTH CYPRUS TO NORTH CYPRUS:Since 2004, when the Republic of Cyprus joined the EU, it has become much easier to cross the border between Northern Cyprus and the south. The locals cross the Cyprus border daily to shop, do business or just visit either half of Nicosia If you are a tourist visiting North Cyprus, all you need to do is present your passport (and visa, if you need one for South Cyprus) at the Turkish Cypriot passport control, who will give you a white slip to fill out with your name, passport number and nationality. It is this white visa form that will be stamped by the Northern Cyprus border authorities, NOT your passport. Once over the North Cyprus border, your passport will be checked again by the Greek Cypriot authorities. You can cross the Northern Cyprus border as many times as you like, and stay as long as you want. The border crossings are open 24 hours a day.Crossing the Cyprus Border by Car:You are not permitted to take a Northern Cyprus hire car into south Cyprus. However, you can take a south Cyprus hire car into North Cyprus, but you will need to purchase additional insurance at the border crossing. This is because there is no insurance company in the south that covers accidents in the north. To cross the border at the Metehan crossing, simply drive into Nicosia and follow the signs for Keryneia (Kyrenia-Girne).You will only need to present your passport and complete a white visa slip once you arrive at the Northern Cyprus border authorities’ checkpoint. This is where you will buy your car insurance.
USEFUL INFORMATION ON CAR HIRE:Rental cars in Northern Cyprus have distinctive red number plates,and are known as “Z” cars, usually with the logo of the company placed on the car. Please note that you are not allowed to cross the border to Southern Cyprus once your car was rented from the North. If you still wish to cross to the South you can drive up to the check point and park your car at the border. From there you can walk across. NORTH CYPRUS RENTAL CAR SERVICES:In North Cyprus you will find several car hire companies operating a large car fleet. At competitive prices, they match good quality services and customer care. Both manual and automatic cars are available with air-conditioning especially useful during hot summer days when temperature rises above 30 degrees. Majority of the cars are right hand drive, since traffic on the island moves on the left. Left hand drive cars are to get too, although little in number. Car rates vary according to the rental and season period. In Northern Cyprus payment for car rental services can be done with currencies like US Dollar, British Pound, Euro, Cyprus Pound or North Cyprus currency which is Turkish Lira. Customers can also pay with credit cards and traveller’s cheques, depending on the agency. DRIVING DIRECTIONS FROM LARNACA AIRPORT TO NORTHERN CYPRUS KYRENIA:When you hire a car in the South you may be advised that you are not permitted to drive it across the Green Line in Nicosia into Northern Cyprus.This isn’t actually true! What is true is that you cannot take a car hired in the North into the South - but you can take one hired in the South into the North. The next confusing thing to get past is the mixture of names all for one destination. You have the names Lefkosia, Lefkosa and Nicosia for the capital of Cyprus and you have Girne, Kyrenia and Keryneia for the main harbour and tourist town in North Cyprus…bear this in mind as you will see all used in your journey from South to North. Okay, so you’ve landed, got your car and you’re ready to go…check the fuel gauge and if you’ve arrived in the early morning or late evening/night make sure you avail yourself of the first petrol station you find that’s open as you have a 100km drive or so to the North (depending on your final destination). As you leave the airport reset your car’s distance gauge…as you leave the airport you come to a roundabout that directs you to take either left or right to Lefkosia - this is just to get you in the mood for the drive and confuse you from the outset!!! Take the first exit (left) to Lefkosia…the signpost reads ‘Lefkosia 59km’.Proceed and you will see salt flats on either side of the road which have flamingos on them in the spring.You come to a small roundabout, go straight on signposted ‘Lefkosia‘.You come to a large roundabout with an overpass above it, go three quarters of the way round this one and take the route marked ‘Lefkosia 56km’ this is the A3...you are on a dual carriageway. Stay on this road and you will see signposts to both Lefkosia and Nicosia pointing straight on…just whatever you do DON’T go to Lemesos!!! After you’ve gone about 12km from the airport the road forks and you take the left hand fork signposted ‘Larnaka’ and ‘Lefkosia A2’.You quickly approach a roundabout and before you get onto it you take the filter lane left to ‘Lefkosia’.You are on dual carriageway, proceed straight ahead on the A2 to Lefkosia and after you’ve gone a good few kilometres from the airport you suddenly merge onto the A1...just keep following the signs to ‘Nicosia’ or ‘Lefkosia’ (remember, they are the same place!). After you’re about 44km away from the airport you will spot a huge football stadium on your left and start to see signs for the ‘General Hospital’, ‘Troodos’ and ‘Strovolos’ as well as a small sign for ‘Kioneli’ and ‘Keryneia’ and the road numbers ‘B22’ and ‘A9’, this is junction 3, it is straight after the football stadium on your left and this is the junction you need to take! You then come to a large roundabout which has coloured balls on it (!!) - take the filter lane left which says Keryneia is 38km, it also is signposted ‘Strovolos and Troodos’.You are in a fairly industrial part of Lefkosia now.Proceed straight on, at the first set of traffic lights you’ll see a large shopping centre on your left where there are toilets, a Macdonalds, cash point etc., in case you need a break…otherwise go straight on at the traffic lights in the direction of ‘Lakatameia and Troodos’.Go straight on at the next lights which are on the brow of a hill and proceed to the next roundabout where you go straight on in the direction of ‘Troodos and Lakatameia’.Go straight on again at the next roundabout where you have a big Metro on your left. Straight on is signposted as ‘Keryneia and Troodos’.You may also notice some white road signs directing you forward to the ‘Makareio Stadium’. You proceed up a hill to the next roundabout and go straight on again signposted ‘Makedonitissa and Keryneia’.Go down the hill and straight on across a couple of sets of small lights until you come back up hill to a T junction with a large Greek church on your right.Go right signposted ‘Kioneli 12km’ and ‘Keryneia 31km’. Proceed forward through a number of sets of small traffic lights (pedestrian crossings mainly) until you come to a roundabout with large yellow hoops on it.You will have gone about 57km from the airport by now. At this roundabout go straight on again and then start looking out for the Coca Cola factory on your right. Just after it there is a set of traffic lights and you need to go left at the traffic lights. There is a sign saying ‘Kioneli 8km’ and ‘Keryneia 12km’ but it’s confusingly posted on the right hand side of the road and not easy to spot! Proceed forward over the next set of traffic lights where there is a shop called ‘4 Seasons’ on your left.You will now be approaching the border…slow right down.Ahead of you you should notice the road bends to the right, there is a slip road to the left marked off with bollards and if you look up you will see Greek, South Cyrus, EU, North Cyprus and Turkish flags flying…this is the border.So, do NOT go round the corner to the right, take the left slip road and proceed to the portacabins ahead of you and stop.You will need your passports, car documents, driving license and some money (Cyprus pounds, English pounds or Turkish lira are accepted). Go to the insurance office and get car insurance for the duration of your stay (it’s not expensive but changes often so I won’t publish a price as it’ll be out of date by next week!), then go to the passport office, fill in the white slips of paper they have there which are visas and which require your name, passport number and nationality.Present the visa, passport and car insurance papers to the passport controller and then when you have your stamp (they stamp the white bit of paper not your passport) you can leave the border and drive straight on into North Cyprus.Proceed ahead to a roundabout with traffic lights, go straight on to Girne…at next roundabout take the first left signposted ‘Girne, Kyrenia, Gonyali, Guzelyurt’ etc., etc! Watch out for lots of speed bumps on this road! You’ll soon come to a roundabout with traffic lights and depending on which way you want to go, the directions change at this point:Going to Girne(KYRENIA) - get in the right hand lane and go three quarters of the way round this roundabout. Proceed straight ahead until you come to a huge roundabout where you take the first left signposted ‘Girne’.Stay on this dual carriage way all the way through the plains and over the mountains and down into Kyrenia or Girne.You will then arrive at a roundabout known locally as the Lefkosa roundabout and you can take the first left for Karaoglanoglu, Alsancak and Lapta, you can go straight ahead for Girne centre or you can go three quarters of the way round for Karakum, Bellapais, Ozankoy, Catalkoy or Esentepe. TRAFFIC INFORMATION:Driving is on the left and traffic and road signs are international.Maximum speed is 100 km/hr.Vehicles entering North Cyprus must be insured upon arrival. Seat-belts must be worn at all times.Drinking and driving is illegal, as is using a mobile phone whilst driving.Car Rentals:Visitors to North Cyprus can drive using a valid international driving license or a valid British driving license for an initial 12 month period.Car rental is relatively inexpensive and is widely available through tour operators, hotels or car hire companies across North Cyprus. Visitors are advised to check when booking as both left and right hand drive cars are available for hire.Please note driving is on the left, as in the UK, and all North Cyprus rental cars carry a distinctive red license plate.If you arrive at Larnaca airport in South Cyprus, you can hire a car and drive across the border, but you will need to purchase small extra insurance at the border.Visitors wishing to bring their own car from abroad may do so for a period of up to 3 months provided the vehicle has a valid registration license from its country of origin. Visitors in Cyprus can drive using a valid international driving license or a valid driving license from their country of origin. Most petrol stations are open from 7:00 a.m. and close around 8:00 a.m. Some however, stay open later and there is an increasing number of stations, which operate 24 hours a day.Free municipal parking is available in all major towns. NORTH CYPRUS BY SEA --- Kyrenia:There are scheduled sea-bus and ferry services from Tasucu (a port city in Turkey, near Silifke) to Kyrenia, and back. The sea-busses operate on a daily basis – the duration of the voyage is about two and a half hours. Ferry boats between Tasucu and Kyrenia go every week – the trip on a ferry boat takes about four hours.Famagusta:You may also choose a ferry-boat operating between Mersin (a port city in the south of Turkey) and Famagusta – three times a week to get to North Cyprus By Sea. Ferry-boats also connect Tasucu and Famagusta, but this voyage is longer lasting for eight hours. The facilities given at Kyrenia Marine: WEATHER IN CYPRUS:Air Temperatures:TRNC has a hot summer and mild winter but this generalization must be modified by consideration of altitude, which lowers temperatures by about 5 degrees C per 1,000 metres, and of marine influences which give cooler summers and warmer winters near most of the coastline and especially on the west coast.The seasonal difference between mid-summer and mid-winter temperatures is quite large at 18 degrees C in the inland areas and about 14 degrees C on the coasts.Differences between day maximum and night minimum temperatures are also quite large especially in the inland areas in summer.These differences are in winter 8 degrees C to 10 degrees C on the lowlands and 5 degrees C to 6 degrees C on the mountains increasing in summer to 16 degrees C in the central plain and 9 degrees C to 12 degrees C elsewhere.In July and August the mean daily temperature ranges between 29 degrees C on the central plain and 24 degrees C on the costal range, while the average maximum temperature for these months ranges between 36 degrees C and 31 degrees C respectively. In January the mean daily temperature is 10 degrees C on the central plain and 12 degrees C on the costal range with an average minimum temperature of 5 degrees C and 9 degrees C respectively. Frosts are rarely severe but are frequent in winter and spring inland and sometimes affect the economically important production of early vegetable crops and main citrus.Sea Temperatures:In the open sea, temperatures rise to 27 degrees C in August and are above 22 degrees C during the six months from June to November. During the three coolest months, January to March, average sea temperature falls only to 16 degrees C or 17 degrees C. Near all coasts, in water three or four metres deep, temperatures are very similar to those of the open sea and lie within the range 15 degrees C to 17 degrees C in February and 23 degrees C to 28 degrees C in August.There is no significant daily change of sea water temperature except on the coast in very shallow waters of less than one metre depth.Rainfall and Snow:The average rainfall of 402 mm, however, is below Mediterranean average, conforms more to the climate pattern of the eastern Mediterranean.Although snowfall is not typical of Cyprus, it can remain on the Troodos massif in the southern part.The coastal plains get a low rainfall, on average from 340 to 500 mm, falling predominately in the winter.Nicosia town is characterized by low average rainfall (324 mm) as it is situated in the outback of the island. In the hilly areas the average rainfall varies between 500 and 750 mm, falling particularly in winter, rarely in the summer.Due to the altitude, the highest number of rainfall is bound to the Kyrenia Mountain range, where it ranges between 750 and 1110 mm. It is the Kyrenia Mountains that create a climatic barrier and make Kyrenia town a sunny destination with very little rainfall all year round.
